The Hypochlorite Sensor is used with the Chemtrac HydroACT analyzers for the measurement of chlorine in industrial bleach (sodium hypochlorite). This optical sensor, with a range of 0-16%, is specifically designed to withstand the harsh chemical environment associated with industrial bleach. The sensor is insensitive to changing pH, uses no reagents, is extremely stable, and has low maintenance
costs. A built-in temperature sensor allows for automatic temperature compensation.

  • Optical sensors – solid state and no moving parts
  • No chemical reagents – lower cost of ownership
  • Stable and reliable – excellent process control
  • Zero maintenance – reduced costs
  • Sensor life up to 15 years – reduced costs
  • Monochloramine (MCA) generation
  • Sodium hypochlorite generation
  • Large industrial bleach users (e.g., paper mills)

The Hypochlorite Sensor is successfully used in many harsh and demanding applications where the concentration of the bleach is important for the efficiency of the process

Overview

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The optical sensor shines light of a specific wavelength (near UV) through the sample, and the amount of light that is absorbed is proportional to the concentration of chlorine in the sample. The sensor has a reference light source and detector for stability, and an built-in temperature sensor for integrated temperature compensation.

The bleach keeps the sensor clean, and bubbles are encouraged to flow through the sensor, and will not settle on the optical surfaces since the flow orientation through the T-fitting is vertical.

Calibration is done with comparison to titration kits, and is generally performed on a 3 or 6-month schedule. Calibration input is via a simple wizard on the controller display.

ANALYZER INTEGRATION
The Hypochlorite Sensor integrates with the HydroACT Series of analyzers using Modbus, which gives full communication with the sensor. Please see the reverse side of this product sheet for details pertaining to I/O, communications, control, and remote access capabilities of the different analyzers offered.

Q & A’s

The Chemtrac HydroACT DPD Chlorine Analyzer is an online instrument that continuously measures free or total residual chlorine using the industry‑standard DPD colorimetric method to help maintain safe and effective disinfection.

The DPD sensor injects DPD reagent into the sample, then uses a 515 nm light source to detect the color change created when the reagent reacts with chlorine, with the color intensity proportional to the chlorine concentration.

The analyzer provides stable, reliable performance with no user calibration required, while its user‑friendly maintenance and long service intervals support excellent process control at a low operating cost.

It is designed for drinking water treatment, distribution system monitoring, wastewater applications, and dechlorination processes where accurate residual chlorine measurement is critical.

Standard features include free or total chlorine measurement (0–5 mg/L range), a pre‑mounted backboard assembly, a reagent starter kit, and alarms for sample flow and reagent level.

Optional upgrades include additional sensor inputs (such as pH, ORP, NTU), expanded I/O, Modbus or Profibus communications, data logging with microSD card download, a color display, sample strainer with automatic flushing, and PID‑based chemical feed control.

Reagents are typically replaced once per month, and a maintenance kit is used about every six months, thanks to the analyzer’s stable design and easy access to internal components.

The DPD sensor offers a 0–5 mg/L measurement range with a detection limit of 0.03 mg/L, resolution of 0.01 mg/L, and accuracy of approximately ±0.5% of the measured value or ±0.04 mg/L, whichever is greater.
