The Laboratory Charge Analyzer for Pulp and Paper applications (LCA-P), is also referred to by some people in the industry as a Particle Charge Detector.

The process of finding the optimum wet strength additive dosage simply involves feeding a measured volume of coagulant into the process water sample and performing a titration (manual or automatic) until reaching a zero charge. That identifies the charge demand in microequivalents per liter (ueq/L) or parts per million (ppm).

Titration of the additives adjustment additives can be performed manually using the LCA-1P, or with the touch of a button using the auto-titration features that come standard on models LCA- 2P and LCA-3P. The automatic titration feature simplifies the testing process and helps ensure the most accurate results possible.

The LCA-P uses the Streaming Current principle to accurately measure the elektrokinetic charge from dissolved colloidal substances, and the ionic charge, in aqueous solutions. The wet end cationic charge demand is determined with a polyelectrolyte (most commonly poly DADMAC) titration to the isoelectric point (zero charge). The charge demand results (ueq/L or ppm) can be found in a matter of minutes (charge demand is also sometimes determined using a more labor intensive and time consuming measurement, Zeta Potential).

Based on the LCA results, optimal wet strength additive dosages are determined and applied in
the papermaking process.
