Overview

Introducing Chemtrac’s Alkalinity Analyzer, a revolutionary solution for measuring total alkalinity online that sidesteps the limitations of traditional methods. Traditional online alkalinity measurement techniques, such as titration to a specific pH or colorimetric methods, suffer from frequent maintenance requirements, including the need for regular calibration and cleaning of pH sensors, or the continuous replacement of costly reagents. These methods not only entail high initial purchase costs but also ongoing
operational expenses.

Using conductivity to detect the titration endpoint, total alkalinity is calculated based on the amount of acid required to neutralize all the alkalinity. This innovative method eliminates the need for calibration and frequent reagent
replacement, making it a cost-effective and user-friendly solution. Ready to operate straight out of the box, the Alkalinity Analyzer is ideal for continuous monitoring in applications like swimming pools, water treatment plants, and
cooling towers, simplifying online alkalinity measurement with unmatched ease and reliability.

Q & A’s

The Chemtrac HydroACT Alkalinity Analyzer continuously measures total alkalinity in water, expressed in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate (mg/L CaCO₃). It is designed specifically for process applications where a live alkalinity signal is needed for control, rather than occasional grab‑sample testing.

The standard operating range is 10–1000 mg/L as CaCO₃, covering low‑alkalinity soft waters through highly buffered systems. Within this range the analyzer maintains good accuracy and reproducibility, making it suitable for both municipal and industrial applications.

No, it does not rely on a pH probe; instead, it uses a conductivity sensor to follow the progress of an automatic acid titration. This eliminates typical pH‑electrode problems like drift, fouling, frequent calibration, and regular probe replacement.

Routine calibration of the alkalinity measurement is not required because the analyzer detects the titration endpoint from the shape of the conductivity curve, not from an absolute sensor value. That design greatly reduces operator workload and minimizes the risk of errors from poor or infrequent calibration.

The system typically uses PTSA (paratoluenesulfonic acid) as the titrant, which reacts with all forms of alkalinity during the automated titration. Using a single standardized reagent simplifies inventory, handling, and replacement compared with multi‑reagent colorimetric systems.

Under normal operating conditions, the reagent life is typically on the order of two months before replacement is needed. Actual intervals depend on sample alkalinity and titration frequency, but the design aims to keep consumable changes infrequent and predictable.

Key advantages are low maintenance, no pH electrode, and only one relatively inexpensive reagent, all while providing stable, repeatable measurements. This lowers total cost of ownership and gives operators a robust alkalinity signal they can trust for automated control.

Yes, the HydroACT platform can be fitted with 4–20 mA outputs and digital communication options such as Modbus or Profibus. These interfaces allow easy connection to SCADA, PLCs, and remote monitoring systems for alarms, trending, and automatic chemical dosing.
